QUICK ANSWER

What is Ocean Echoes?

Ocean Echoes is a 3D underwater adventure game for the browser in which you swim Nami the dolphin through reefs, kelp forests, sunken ruins and the dark deep, using sonar pulses to find and wake what holds the ocean's lost melody. Each of the 20 missions chains 3 to 5 objectives, from ringing runes in the right order to guiding a lost turtle home, and every fourth mission returns an Ocean Note that paints a grey world back into colour. Nothing ends a mission for good: losing all three scallops only sends Nami back to her last checkpoint.

How do you play Ocean Echoes?

Swim with WASD or the arrow keys, Space to rise and C to sink, or use the left stick and the up/down slider on a phone. The line at the top shows the current objective and the arrow under it points the way. Press J or tap Sonar to send a 16 m pulse: things to scan or wake answer when Nami is close, and a glowing note needs Sonar held for 1.4 seconds. Each pulse costs 24 Resonance, which refills on its own. Jellyfish, swaying kelp and rolling stones cost one of three scallops. Finish every objective, then swim into the light portal.

Tips & strategy

  1. Sonar refills at 12 Resonance per second, so wait about two seconds between pulses instead of tapping in a hurry.
  2. In melody missions, read the symbols at the top from left to right; a wrong rune only restarts that tune.
  3. Keep at least 24 Resonance after a Dash (it costs 30) so you can still pulse Sonar when you arrive.
  4. When guiding the turtle or the fish school, stay within about 11 m; if your friend stops, swim back until it follows.
  5. Swim through the glowing rings in Whispering Kelp: each one pushes Nami 4 m/s faster for 0.7 s.

Ocean Echoes FAQ

How does sonar work in Ocean Echoes?

Each pulse spreads a 16 m ring of sound and costs 24 of Nami's 100 Resonance, which refills at 12 per second. Targets to scan answer within 12 m, while switches, chimes and runes need Nami within 7 m. Under 24 Resonance the pulse does not fire and the screen says so.

What happens when Nami loses all three scallops?

Nami returns to the last checkpoint with full health, and every objective already finished stays finished. A checkpoint is saved after every two objectives. The cost is 100 points per return and the third star, which needs a run with no returns.

How do you solve the melody puzzles in Ocean Echoes?

The symbols at the top of the screen give the order (sun, wave, spiral, star, ring) and each rune in the water carries one of them. Pulse Sonar next to the runes in that order. A wrong rune restarts only that melody, and the decoy runes in missions 10 and 12 just answer "Only an echo of an echo…".

How do you get three stars on an Ocean Echoes mission?

One star for finishing, one for finding at least 70 % of the purple Echo Shards (3 of 3 in missions 1–8, 3 of 4 from mission 9), and one for finishing within the target time without a checkpoint return. Target times run from 85 s in mission 1 to 160 s in mission 20, 60 stars in total.

What are the Ocean Notes in Ocean Echoes?

Missions 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20 each close a world by bringing back one note: Dawn, Flow, Memory, Hope and Harmony. When a note returns, the camera pans over the world while its grey coral, kelp and stone regain colour, and Free Swim opens there with no objectives and no damage.

How do you free the lost turtle in Ocean Echoes mission 3?

First scan the turtle, then pulse Sonar beside each of the three knots of the net that holds it. Once free it follows Nami while she stays within about 11 m and waits, unharmed, if she swims farther. Lead it slowly to the safe spot; guiding a friend home adds 150 points.

Is there a way to play Ocean Echoes without taking damage?

Yes: switch on Gentle Mode in Settings. Jellyfish, kelp and stones still push Nami aside, but they never take a scallop. Escorted friends cannot get hurt in any mode. Subtitles, reduced motion and high contrast are in the same menu.
